AUTHOR MARCUS BORG IN MADISON APRIL 26 |
|
Students are invited to join The Crossing for these lectures and a luncheon with Dr. Borg -- for free. Register early as space is limited. Held at First United Methodist Church, Madison. Call 608-255-9061. Doors will open for the annual Lyons Lecture at 9 a.m. and events begin with Dr. Borg's first lecture at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. With a title of "Two Visions of Christianity Today," Dr. Borg will discuss two contemporary and very different ways of seeing the Bible, the Christian tradition, the Christian life, and what it means to be Christian. In describing these two visions, he will clarify the differences and seek points of commonality. Following lunch, there will be a second lecture at 1 p.m. on "What Christianity is All About: Loving God and Changing the World." A book signing will be at 2:45 p.m. Dr. Borg will also be giving the sermons on Sunday, April 27, which will follow the lectionary. Overall, this promises to be an enlightening weekend, one in which it is possible to anticipate many theological and spiritual insights. Marcus J. Borg, who holds the Hundere Chair in Religion and Culture in the Philosophy Department at Oregon State University, is the author of fourteen other books, lectures frequently, and was recently interviewed by Jean Feraca (along with Crossan) on Wisconsin Public Radio. That interview was about their other co-authored book, The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus's Birth. You can hear that interview online at http://www.wpr.org/hereonearth/archive_071219k.cfm. The annual Lyons Lecture honors the memory and ministry of Rev. David Lyons, former pastor of First United Methodist Church. |
