Dalai Lama tickets available Saturday

Free tickets to hear the Dalai Lama speak in Madison in May will be available starting Saturday.  The Dalai Lama will speak with Richard J. Davidson, director of the UW-Madison Center for Investigating Healthy minds, at 2:15 pm. May 16 in the overture Center.  Tickets to "Investigating Healthy Minds" will be available on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum of two tickets per person.  They can be picked up at Vilas hall, 821 University Ave., or Memorial Union.  They also can be reserved by calling 608-265-2787.  Phone orders must be picked up at the campus box offices before 5 pm May 15.

  Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry will talk about his thirty years of cooking for peace and working to end hunger, poverty and war. Food Not Bombs shares vegan and vegetarian meals with the hungry in over 1,000 cities around the globe each week. The 45 minute presentation includes the history, principles, and current actions of the Food Not Bombs movement around the world, a 15 minute video about Food Not Bombs in Africa, closing with questions from the audience. Keith will also provide literature, books, t-shirts and dvds about Food Not Bombs. Keith has volunteered with Food Not Bombs for nearly 30 years. He spent two years in jail and faced life in prison in California for his work with Food Not Bombs. Amnesty International declared Keith and all Food Not Bombs volunteers “Prisoners of Conscience” if convicted. He has collected, cooked and shared vegan meals with Food Not Bombs groups in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. This is also a great way to get involved with the Food Not Bombs group in your community.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week

Come to an Earth Day event that will last all year!

Well known UW professor and food activist, Jack Kloppenburg, will keynote the fourth annual “Food, Faith, and Earth Day” on April 25, 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the First Unitarian Meeting House, 900 University Bay Drive, Madison.. “Eating is perhaps the most intimate way in which we engage with the world around us,” says Kloppenburg. “The manner and substance of our eating should reflect our spiritual and ethical values, and a positive relationship with the Earth.” At this event, members of more than 20 congregations including Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and Buddhist faiths, and Native American traditions, will gather together to explore “The Sacred Act of Eating.”

The afternoon will include music, workshops, and exhibits, and culminate in a community meal featuring locally-grown food prepared by Chef Barbara Wright of The Dardanelles restaurant in Madison.

The event is open to anyone interested in turning discussions about sustainable practices and locally-grown foods into action. Methodist Theological School in Ohio Scholarship Opportunity

The Harding Scholarship awards full tuition plus a $10,000 annual stipend for three years to one outstanding candidate for scholarship and ministry. Candidates must have a 3.6 or higher undergraduate GPA. This competition is open to all new students pursuing any of our master's programs. Applications are due by Monday, February 1, 2010.  MTSO offers five graduate degrees. The Master of Divinity is our largest program, with nine optional specializations including Biblical Languages and Texts, Youth Ministry, Pastoral Care and Counseling, Spirituality, and Church Leadership. Our second largest degree is the Master of Arts in Counseling Ministries program, which leads to state licensure as a professional counselor. We also offer the Master of Arts in Christian Education, the Master of Theological Studies and the Doctor of Ministry.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Mission Trip to Havana, Cuba

 

The International Ministry team at First United Methodist Church is presently organizing a team of volunteers to help build homes for visiting faculty at a new seminary being constructed in Havana, Cuba by the Methodist Church in Cuba.  The trip will be approximately June 19 to 29, 2010. Construction expertise is not required.  Physical activities may include lifting cinder blocks and buckets of sand and mixing mortar.  Cost is estimated at $1,700 per team member, which covers travel insurance; travel to, from and within Cuba; Miami/Havana luggage fees; lodging in Miami and Havana and most meals; Cuban visa; and trip leader’s expenses. Spots on the team are assigned on a first come basis by contacting Donna Veatch, the team leader, and paying a $500 deposit.   Deadline for signing up is April 1, 2010. United Methodist Volunteers In Mission Teams

Ica, Peru Mission 2010, July 29 - August 12, 2010
This Wisconsin Conference Mission trip needs 30 medical and construction volunteers. The construction team will assist bricklayers to add a second story onto COPE Methodist Green Love Church in FONAVI La Angostura in Ica. This church doubles as a school and community center. The medical team will be working in Pisco with four different churches hosting clinics. Possible Vacation Bible School option to be added to the work duties. Estimated cost of the mission: $1400. Bob and Regina Elgin have scheduled their 2010 teachUM team. This team will work with the children's programs and preschools for the Nicaraguan Methodist Church, IGLEMEN. They will help build or do maintenance on a church building designated by the IGLEMEN Board. Nicaragua team brochure.

UMVIM team to the Philippines, February 23-March 7, 2010
The project site is within the North Luzon Philippines Annual Conference. The Mission site is ASBURY COLLEGE a United Methodist institution in the town of Anda, province of Pangasinan. The town of Anda is famous for its beautiful Hundred Islands white beach resort, 150 miles north of Manila city. The mission will focus on repair and painting the interior of the school facilities.Team leader: Rev. Noah R. Panlilio, 815-838-1017. Cost: $2,100. A $500 down payment is requested. BOLIVIA, Thiu Rancho Center, July 31 - Aug 15, 2010
Construction and other duties as detailed by GBGM Missionaries Ardelle and Gordon Graner whose assignment is to work in solidarity with the Bolivian Evangelical Methodist Church. Thiu Rancho center is a national church project under the IEMB, Iglesia Evangelica Metodista en Bolivia. The mission is to build the Kingdom of God, seeking transformation of individuals, human relationships, and our relationship to the creation through a full commitment to Jesus Christ.

Job Description:  Provide child care for a small group of children aged 5 and under on Sunday mornings during the education hour and worship service, assisted by one volunteer from the Madison Christian Community. (Please see below for a more detailed job description and position expectations.)

Hours: Sundays, 8:50 am – 11:30 am during the school year.  9:20 am – 11:00 am during the summer.  (Summer session is Memorial Day through Labor Day.)

Detailed Job Description & Expectations: 

* Provide hands-on child care for children aged 5 and under during the Sunday education hour and worship hour. You will work with one volunteer from the community each Sunday.

* You should enjoy kids!  You should also have a friendly and engaging disposition, and are expected to positively interact with the children as much as possible.  

* Take the time to learn each child’s name and get to know them individually.

* Be comfortable interacting with parents/guardians at drop-off and pick-times and additionally as needed.  

* While the nursery is in an indoor setting, the kids may play in the outdoor play area with your supervision when weather permits.  You should be comfortable working in both settings.  

* You should offer guidance and direction to the children regarding the schedule while they are in the nursery.  Offer variety such as free play time, group activities, snack time, and clean up.  Creativity and flexibility are key!

* Follow the provided nursery discipline plan if conflicts arise.  Inform parents and Nursery Coordinator right away of any injuries or discipline problems.  

* Light clean-up of the nursery is expected each week.  This mainly involves straightening, organizing, and putting away toys.  

* Communicate often with the Nursery Coordinator regarding any concerns, difficulties, or ideas about improving the time children spend in the nursery.  The Nursery Coordinator will check in with you regularly.

* Be prompt and reliable.  While we understand that things may come up causing you to miss a shift on occasion, please do your best to be on time and available each and every Sunday.  If you must miss a shift, inform the Nursery Coordinator well in advance and find a sub from the list of church volunteers. 

* There is a required training portion to the job that must be completed before you can begin work in the nursery.  This can be completed in just a few hours.  There will also be a background and reference check prior to beginning employment.

Interfaith Youth Core Summer Internship Program

 

This program gives exceptional interfaith leaders the opportunity to work alongside IFYC staff while developing skills to support their own interfaith organizing work. They will engage in service learning, skill-building workshops, study the theory and history behind the interfaith youth movement, and gain valuable hands-on job experience. Great Opportunity! The World Council of Churches is looking for five young people (age 18-30) to serve as interns in their Geneva offices.
